In India and internationally, one of the most prevalent and recognized disabilities is visual impairment. It is estimated that the visually impaired population in the world is 285 million (39 million blind and 246 million suffering from partial visual impairment). Visually impaired individuals from India alone account for 21.9% of the global estimate, but this number widens further in terms of education and employment for the visually impaired. In India, services for the visually impaired people have improved and broadened over the last few years. On job seeking websites such as monster.com, LinkedIn there are around 30-40K job openings/opportunities for a target population of 60 Lakh and counting out of which a very large number does consist of manual, traditional jobs restricting an individual to work in the upcoming new-age industries such as IT, Software to name a few. In addition to that, the infrastructure of the office spaces and the training required to work and accommodate in the new age industry lacks causing restrictions even for an individual who has the training, education and skill to work in the same. The challenges facing most institutions for the visually impaired are that they are heavily reliant on old data and that they are using technology that has not yet been fine-tuned to the specific needs of the users preventing individuals from keeping up with the skills that are required of them when seeking employment, thus negatively impacting their employ ability. Children with visual challenges often do not receive the necessary support and intervention to be able to communicate in the outside world hampering their growth in terms of socialisation and education.
