Every 4th minute in India and every 20 seconds in the world, a women is diagnosed of breast cancer. Due to late detection in India and developing countries, almost 75% of these women undergo radical or modified radical mastectomy and lose either one or both breasts leading to physical issues such as postural abnormalities, awkward walking and back-shoulder pain and great emotional distress.
While breast conservation surgery through implants and autologous reconstruction is upcoming in India, it is still very expensive and inaccessible for the masses. Non-invasive external silicone based breast prosthesis is one of the most preferred option after mastectomy over implants and these prosthesis come in various shapes and sizes and are worn inside special pocketed bras however the high cost and sporadic accessibility only through imports of these has always prevented the reach to patients. Moreover in order for an effective fitting, a patient needs to be given a trial so that she may select the most appropriate mastectomy bra and prosthesis size as per her choice. This situation has resulted in a lack of in-house breast-prosthesis service within hospitals and as a result women are forced to leave the hospitals with permanent void(d) in their body.
